Jeep has given the SRT treatment to its flagship Grand Cherokee and the result is the creation of the firm’s fastest and most potent production model ever. How does a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration of 4.8 seconds or a quarter mile time in the mid-13 second range sound? This is what the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is capable of, and the reason for these figures lies under the SUV's bonnet.

The Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology division (SRT for short) equipped the performance SUV with an all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 465 horsepower and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) of torque.

Compared to the outgoing model powered by the 6.1-liter HEMI V8 unit, the new Grand Cherokee SRT8 has an extra 45HP and 45 lb-ft (61 Nm) of torque. About 90 percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 can do 0-100-0 mph in the mid-16 second range and has a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The first condition is that 90 percent of Fiat's Latin American dealers must offer Chrysler vehicles as well. To satisfy this request, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne plans to sell Chrysler models rebadged as Fiats in Brazil, Latin America's largest market, where the Italian brand holds the number one spot.

Given that over forty per cent of all cars sold in Europe are diesel-powered, any brand that wants to be successful in the market must have diesel options in its range. Following the presentation of its new 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel on the Chrysler 300's European clone, the Lancia Thema, the Fiat Group is now introducing the oil-burner to the Jeep Grand Cherokee range for Europe and other diesel markets around the world.

We've heard of thieves stealing wheels, tires, GPS and audio systems from cars, but pinching off doors from Jeep Wranglers is something new. However, that's exactly what's happening in Overland Park in Kansas, as thieves are taking doors off Jeep Wrangles and selling them online. Local police told KMBC news that four such thefts took place in the past few weeks alone.

According to the report, because the Jeep Wrangler's doors are hinged on the outside of the vehicle, it's very easy to remove the bolts if the vehicle is unlocked. The Overland Park police suggested that owners should keep their cars locked [maybe a warning sticker similar to the one found on mirrors could help...] adding that there are special bolt kits that make it very difficult to remove the doors.

With the debut of the all new Dodge Charger SRT8 at the Chicago Auto Show this week, rumors are already starting to swirl about the next high-powered model to come from the Chrysler group. And the reports point to a new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

The power of the new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will be sent through a 5-speed automatic transmission featuring manual shift control via the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters to all four wheels via Jeep’s advanced all wheel drive system. Like the 2011 Charger SRT8, the "2012 Jeep SRT8" could feature an adaptive damping suspension system that could help the sporty ute protect the claim of being the best-handling SUV on the road.

Sources suggest that the 2012 Jeep Grand SRT8 will be powered by the same 6.4L HEMI V8 engine found in the new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 (also found in the 2011 Challenger SRT8), which was recently unveiled at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. Looks wise the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will be very aggressive inside out. Refresher: The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is on sale now is available 3 models: Laredo, Limited and Overland. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×2 model starts at $30,995, while the 4×4 Grand Cherokee Laredo model starts at $32,995.

The automobile is such an integral part of so many people’s lives that it’s no wonder than artists and sculptors often use them for inspiration. Take Sandy Sanderson of Hamilton, New Zealand, for example. He takes beer and soft drink cans and crafts them into meticulous, highly detailed replicas of hot rods and other classic cars. And Mr. Sanderson really is a meticulous sculptor.

Fundamentally, you wouldn't recognize the Grand Cherokee as a country cousin of a Mercedes. The Grand Cherokee also marks the debut of Chrysler's first new V-6 engine in a decade.

Chrysler's survived—and it's incredible the Grand Cherokee has turned out so well, considering all the corporate agita.

Americans love comeback stories. Conveniently, the previous Grand Cherokee had this covered. Overall, Jeep has done well here. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger midsize SUV that comes in Laredo, Limited and Overland trims. The Limited gets all the Laredo's optional equipment plus 18-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, driver memory functions, heated front and rear seats and a leather-wrapped shift knob.

The Luxury Group II gets you a power tailgate, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats. Big 20-inch wheels are also optional. The Off-Road Adventure II package includes all the above items plus an air suspension, towing equipment (available as a separate package), an electronic limited-slip differential and the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system. The Limited and Overland can be equipped with a rear-seat entertainment system with Sirius Backseat TV. Every 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes standard with Chrysler's new 3.6-liter V6 good for 290 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard. Fuel economy with four-wheel drive is an estimated 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Rear-wheel drive is standard; three different four-wheel-drive systems are optional. The Laredo comes standard with Quadra-Trac I, which essentially functions as all-wheel drive.

The "2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee" comes standard with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints.

In the government's new, more strenuous crash testing for 2011, the Grand Cherokee earned an overall rating of four stars out of a possible five, with four stars for overall frontal crash protection and five stars for overall side crash protection.

Get behind the wheel and you'll immediately notice that the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee drives considerably better than before.

With a redesign for 2011, the Jeep Grand Cherokee bridges the gap between luxury SUV and rugged four-wheeler. CNET concludes that the Grand Cherokee “has few equals in the luxury SUV segment for off-road prowess. The Grand Cherokee’s fuel economy continues to disappoint. Jeep estimates that base two-wheel-drive models will net 16/23 mpg city/highway, while 4WD models will net 16/22.

If you want an off-road vehicle with better fuel economy, consider the Jeep Patriot--The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in four trims -- the base Laredo E, Laredo X, Limited and top-of-the-line Overland.

Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne’s key productivity deal won narrow backing from workers of the historic Mirafiori plant in Turin, with 54% of them voting in favor of the groundbreaking contract that limits strikes and absenteeism in exchange for investment.

The agreement enables the automaker to start building Jeep models in Italy and it’s also considered as a crucial step in Alfa Romeo’s U.S. launch. The deal was fiercely contested by a more hard-line Italian union, which threatened the deal with strikes. Fiat said last week that it’s ready to pull out altogether from the country if an understanding is not reached.

The North American International Auto Show bore witness to the drastically improved 2011 Jeep Compass from the Chrysler staple. On the design front, the 2011 Jeep Compass comes complete with a modified front fascias, newly styled lighting units, a redesigned front grille and standard 17-inch aluminum wheels. Thanks to dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT), with an estimated mileage of 23/29 mpg city/highway.

A case in point is the 2011 Jeep Compass, a compact sport-utility vehicle now on display at the North American International Automobile Show here--Look a little closer and you will recognize its likeness to the flagship Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Most importantly, the engineers have added a second four-wheel-drive system that gives the Compass Jeep's Trail Rated designation.

The 2011 Compass is available in three configurations -- Compass, Latitude and Limited. All can be purchased with front-wheel-drive, standard full-time all-wheel drive or the off-road package.
Either engine is available on Compass and Latitude models. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic shifter.

I've just spent the last few days in a new "2011 Jeep Compass" with the new Freedom Drive II option. The Compass and Patriot are built off the same platform but the Compass was never given the CVT that allows for a lower "first gear" ratio, helpful for navigating difficult weather conditions or light trails. Neither the Compass nor the Patriot has a transfer case with a low-gear ratio and many are sold without all-wheel drive. For the 2011 model year, the Jeep Compass with Freedom Drive II is Trail Rated, as peculiar as that might sound.

We have to admit that we feel for Ferrari's F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. As if being forced to wear jokey caps, blouses and t-shirts full of ads, and drive around exclusively in Fiat Group products such as the Abarth 500 wasn't enough of a pain in the behind (a quick look at their bank statements should ease the pain though...), the dynamic duo is now being used to promote the Chrysler Group's offerings such as the Jeep Wrangler.
