We remember a time when people bought sports cars solely for their performance qualities, not for the luxury, attention, or status they brought. German boutique carmaker Gumpert, however, takes us back to those days with its 2008 Apollo Sport, a car with a single-minded purpose: to go very, very fast.
Scoring zero to little on the name-brand value scale (and with a name like Gumpert, it’s bound to stay that way), the Gumpert Apollo Sport offers pure speed in return. The Apollo Sport is the successor to the Gumpert Apollo, which debuted two years ago in much the same form, albeit without the Sport’s racing-style rear wing that appears to have been sourced from Boeing. Certainly exotic in proportions, but starkly unemotional in the details, the Apollo Sport looks less like the stuff of the Greek gods than something a teenager would have doodled during sixth-period civics class.
That having been said, few teenagers are capable of developing their dream cars into actual, drivable automobiles, let alone supercars with mind-blowing performance. Powered by a mid-mounted 800-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 that started life in the Audi parts bin before Gumpert added twin turbochargers, among numerous other mods, the 2650-pound Apollo Sport is said to hit 62 mph in a Murciélago-humbling three seconds flat. Gumpert claims that aerodynamic enhancements have raised the Apollo Sport’s top speed to 223 mph.
The Apollo Sport also boasts a more comfortable interior, finished in Alcantara and offering air conditioning, navigation, and a CD player. But make no mistake, this is a sports-car environ of the purest variety, making 599GTBs, SLRs, and 911 Turbos feel like Maybachs by comparison.
Like the Apollo, the Apollo Sport is built on a tubular-steel space frame wrapped around a carbon-fiber monocoque, thus yielding safety and weight savings in equal measure. However, don’t expect NHTSA to be running any Apollo Sports into walls on our shores to find out, since the Apollo Sport won’t be offered in the U.S., no matter how many gazillionaires here could afford its near-$400,000 price.
INDEPENDENT Chinese car-maker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has signed a binding deal to buy Ford's Volvo Cars unit for $1.8billion (£1.2bn) as it bids to expand into Europe.
The purchase gives Geely a European luxury car brand with a reputation for safety and quality at a time when China, which last year surpassed the US as the world's largest car market, is eager to improve its competitiveness by acquiring foreign automotive brands that might help it improve its technology and expand into overseas markets.
The price, which includes a $200million note with the remainder to be paid out in cash, is far less than the $6.45bn Ford paid for the Swedish car-maker in 1999.
The US car-maker has been trying to sell Volvo since late 2008 to focus its resources on managing its core Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands.

Well the XS carbs are clean and all the bits and pieces that needed replacin’ have been replaced. I procured a can of Gunk CC3K carburetor and parts cleaner to do the dirty work. If your about to rebuild your carbs, I highly recommend this stuff. It makes you parts look like new. I suggest that you remove all your silicone and rubber pieces before your carbs take a bath. I left my parts to soak overnight and in the morning they were as clean as the day they were born.
You need to neutralize the cleaner with some hot soapy water after they soak. Don’t forget your gloves either, this stuff will stay with you all day, and the scent it cast is hard to get off your skin. Plus this stuff is pretty nasty and one should not absorb it though one’s skin if it can be avoided.
A word of caution if any of you are about to do a rebuild of your XS650 carbs. Be very carful with your BUTTERFLY SHAFT SEALS. Mike’s XS and 650 Central are fresh out of these puppies and as far as I can tell, you will need to purchase the whole butterfly assembly if you need to replace them. Mine were in fine condition, but I wanted to replace them anyway because of their age. I could not find a set anywhere, if someone knows where to find a set without buying a whole butterfly assembly or set of carbs, drop me a line and I will share the info here.
I still have a bit of work to do before putting the carbs back on the bike. Mainly just cleaning up some bits and pieces of the bike, like the air box, battery cage, chain guard and some nicks and scratches here and there an she will be road worthy . I can hardly wait.
